    Spray cooling using aqueous titania nanofluids was studied. The temperatures of a testing plate under various spraying conditions were first measured; an inverse heat conduction technique was then applied to convert these measured temperatures into heat transfer coefficients (HTCs). It was found that the HTC increased logarithmically with the volume flux, but was decreased with the increase of the nanoparticle fraction. A correlation analysis was performed to quantify the HTC reduction caused by the increase of nanoparticles, and reconfirmed that the major cause for the HTC reduction was the difference in the impact (or impingement) behavior between solid nanoparticles and fluid droplets. A comparison study of the present findings with the previous published results was also performed and indicated that all results compared were consistent to each other based on the similar spray cooling conditions with different nanofluids or nozzles. The effects by using aquatic titania nanofluids instead of aquatic alumina nanofluids and by using full-cone nozzle instead of solid jet nozzle were specifically assessed and the associated rationales for the differences in these effects were given

    High energetic water jets sprayed from the nozzles are used for scale removing. Special nozzles with flat and very narrow jet for high feeding pressure are applied. This process called descaling is applied, for example, in hot rolling. Number of jets must be used to cover the total width of a rolled strip. Good quality and homogeneity of descaling process is required. A row of high pressure descaling nozzles is often used. This paper focuses on the area where water streams from adjacent nozzles interact. Water impact measurements were conducted for several nozzle configurations and the measuring technique with the results obtained is presented. The water impact for multiple nozzles was computed and the results were compared with the measurements.

    Thermal contact conductance is an important parameter for describing heat transfer between two bodies. When two solids are put in contact and heat transfer occurs, the temperature drop is observed at the interface between solids. It is caused by an imperfect joint which occurs because of real surfaces are not perfectly smooth and flat. An experimental device for the evaluation of thermal contact conductance was designed and fabricated in Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow Laboratory. The principal of this investigation is the unsteady measurement of temperatures of two solids which are put in contact. The surface temperature and heat transfer coefficient can be calculated from measured temperatures by an inverse heat transfer task. The paper describes experimental device and the determination of thermal contact conductance between two solids with different contact pressure and initial temperatures. The measured data and computed values of thermal contact conductance were presented and compared with other experimental study.

    Steel oxidation during the hot rolling in-line process is undesirable behavior. High pressure descaling nozzles are often used to remove oxides from the surface of a product. The water spray from high pressure nozzles also causes intense cooling. Knowledge of this cooling intensity is necessary for on-line simulations used by control systems. Knowledge of boundary conditions can also help with the choice of descaling nozzles. These boundary conditions are surface temperature, surface heat flux and the heat transfer coefficient (HTC). The HTC can be obtained from the measured temperature histories inside a test plate by inverse heat conduction problem or from the measured surface temperatures. This article describes a new inverse method for the computation of HTCs from surface temperature measurements using an infrared line-scanner during descaling experiments. The measurement technique used to obtain data for the inverse method is described as well. Data from real measurements are presented and evaluated.

    The production of steel by using hot rolling represents one of the biggest parts of steel production. The rolled materials final properties do not depend only on the chemical composition but also on the cooling process after rolling. This article concerns the simulation of heat treatment of steel products during the in-line process. The purpose of these simulations is to determine future cooling curves, the cooling rate and the final structure of the material in advance. Simulations can be carried out for many steel grades. However, for these simulations, knowledge of cooling intensity in cooling sections is necessary. This article specifically focuses on the determination of boundary conditions from the experimental measurements which are carried out as close to plant cooling conditions as possible. During these measurements two line infrared-scanners measured surface temperature distribution across hot steel before and after the cooling section in laboratory conditions. The objective of laboratory measurement was to establish data for a new inverse approach for computation of the heat transfer coefficient during the cooling process. The algorithm for the inverse method and example of obtained results are described. Obtained cooling intensities are applied and the simulation of heat treatment is presented as well.
