Course detail
Processes, Jigs and Tools in Machining Technology
FSI-HNP Acad. year: 2026/2027 Summer semester
The course is divided into two consecutive parts. The first part introduces students to the fundamentals of production planning and process design, including workholding and tooling equipment. This is followed by the design of tools and fixtures within Production Planning, as an integrated part of the machining technology process.
The primary objective of the course is to familiarize students with both the basics of the machining production process and the design of cutting tools and fixtures for machining. The course also includes tool materials and their application in tool design. For a fundamental introduction to design, students complete an individual project to design a basic tool and fixture for chip-removal machining using modern, accessible CAD applications.

Department
Entry knowledge
Reading and creating technical drawings; personal computer skills.
Proficiency in 3D CAD applications.
Secondary school-level mathematics.
Basic knowledge of the thermal, chemical, and surface treatment of materials, primarily metals and their alloys.
Fundamentals of time estimation for machining processes and their function.
Rules for evaluation and completion of the course
1. Awarding of Credit
The course credit is awarded based on the completion of all assigned projects and active participation in practical sessions.
2. Examination
A written exam, administered in accordance with the University Examination Regulations, supplemented by an oral examination.
Attendance Policy
Attendance in practical sessions is mandatory. A maximum of 10% of absences may be excused. In justified cases where a student has a higher rate of excused absence, an individual assignment may be granted based on a recommendation from the head of the department. In justified cases, missed sessions may be made up by attending parallel sessions within the same week.
Aims
To introduce students to the methodology of production planning for engineering components, the design of manufacturing processes, and the analysis of relevant interrelationships within the production technology of machine parts.
A further objective of the course is to acquaint students with the fundamental principles of designing and constructing both standard and state-of-the-art tools and fixtures for various basic machining technologies, utilizing computer technology.
This course will enable students to master the fundamentals of designing manufacturing processes for typical engineering components, with a focus on the interconnections between individual phases of the production sequence. Students will also gain a basic understanding of designing tools for machining in fundamental technologies (including principle design and cutting material selection). In the design of fixtures, the student will acquire essential knowledge for designing the principles of positioning and clamping the workpiece in a fixture for basic machining technologies. When solving problems, they will actively employ modern computer technology.
Study aids
The primary literature for the course comprises lecture theses and the following textbooks: "Tools and Fixtures for Machining" and "Production Planning." Furthermore, study sources include technical literature, professional journal articles, and commercial catalogs featuring modern machines, tools, and measuring instruments.
