Original abstract
All students entering any faculty of Brno University of Technology have to study English on a compulsory basis. Since the students come from different types of secondary schools, their language knowledge varies a lot. Therefore, an electronic entrance placement test has been introduced to provide students with courses that really fit their knowledge and skills. It had been designed at our faculty, tested in various courses with students of different levels, analysed and adapted many times before it was created and developed for the use at the whole university. Every year there are new variants added to provide a wide range of source materials for generating different test variants. The paper will not concentrate on the test itself only, but especially on its reliability and the impact it has on placing the students in the courses. It will also deal with the methodology used to create the output tests elaborated for each course, as well as on the thorough analysis carried out to find out the reliability of all their parts. Based on these paper-and-pen tests there will be an electronic database created to generate the variants of tests, which are planned for the use in computer labs.
