Nuclear energy is currently one of the most widely discussed topics in the Czech energy sector. How do nuclear power plants work? What challenges will the energy industry face in the coming decades? And what role could future engineers play in it? These questions were the focus of the lecture Nuclear Without Borders, where experts from the ČEZ Group visited the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at BUT.
The invitation was accepted by Bohdan Zronek, Member of the Board of Directors and Director of the Nuclear Energy Division at the ČEZ Group, and Jiří Puchnar, a BUT graduate and member of the performance improvement team at the Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant. In their presentations, they explained the principles of how nuclear power plants operate, discussed current topics in Czech energy policy, and outlined the planned development of nuclear energy sources in the Czech Republic.
The lecture, held in the Q Auditorium, attracted both BUT students and high school students interested in technology and energy. It was followed by a discussion session in which participants asked about topics such as the safety of nuclear power plants, the future of the energy mix, and career opportunities in the energy sector.
We would like to thank our colleagues from the Energy Institute at FME for organizing the lecture.
Students interested in energy can also pursue this field at the faculty through the bachelor’s study programme Energy, followed by several master’s programmes and specialisations focused on modern energy technologies and the operation of energy facilities. Applications for study can be submitted until the end of March.
