The Days of Electron Microscopy (DEM) once again show that even things normally invisible can be of crucial importance. Experts from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at BUT (FME) and CEITEC BUT are actively involved in this year’s edition of the event. A rich programme has been prepared for schools, families with children, and the general public—and admission is free.
Electron microscopy is one of the fields that continually pushes the boundaries of human knowledge. It allows us to observe structures at the nanometre scale, study materials, biological samples, and advanced technologies, and even approach the level of individual atoms. Brno is also a global centre of electron microscopy—every third electron microscope sold worldwide originates here. This is one of the reasons why the Days of Electron Microscopy hold a special place in our city.
The programme across Brno will be truly diverse, and FME will also be involved. What events prepared by our colleagues from the Institute of Physical Engineering can you look forward to?
An Introduction to Electron Microscopy for Primary and Secondary Schools
26–27 March, 9:00–12:00
CEITEC BUT, Purkyňova 123 (meeting point in the main building foyer)
Free admission | For schools | Guided tour, lecture
This special programme for primary school pupils and secondary school students offers an introduction to the world of electron microscopy. Participants will learn how microscopes work, where they are used, and why they are so important for modern science and industry. The programme will provide a behind-the-scenes look at a field that reveals what is normally hidden from the human eye.
Experience Science First-Hand with Petr Viewegh
28 March, 9:00–12:00
CEITEC BUT, Purkyňova 123 (main building foyer)
Free admission | For families with children and the general public | Science show
This entertaining science show will present physical phenomena in a playful and interactive way. Why do we (not) fall off a bicycle? Why do we sometimes sleep better—or worse—at night? And why does water boil differently in the mountains than at home? You can look forward to experiments with liquid nitrogen, demonstrations from hydrodynamics, vacuum physics, light, and many other fascinating topics.
Everything You Wanted to Know About Electron Microscopy but Were Afraid to Ask
28 March, 10:00
CEITEC BUT, Purkyňova 123 (main building foyer)
Free admission | For families with children and the general public | Lecture
Prof. Jiří Spousta will guide visitors through the world of electron microscopes—devices that allow us to explore the microworld with extraordinary resolution. During this popular-science lecture, he will explain how these instruments work and demonstrate the possibilities that this technology offers today in both science and industry.
