Originální abstrakt
Since the academic year 2005-2006 the curricula of language courses taught at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Brno University of Technology, have been innovated in order to respect the increased demands on the language skills and communicative competence. Since English is the lingua franca of today s globalized world of technology, science and the Internet, it has been prescribed by the university management as compulsory for all students, while other languages are provided as optional. When introducing the new system of language courses, the Department of Foreign Languages had to solve various tasks from adapting the descriptors of target language skills according to the Common European Framework, to ensuring methodological and technical basis enabling effective language learning. The paper will describe the whole process summarizing in brief the most important areas and the requirements laid on the languages in tertiary education (selection of curricula materials respecting professional orientation of students, technical equipment facilitating modern didactic approaches and methodology, compensation for low number of teaching hours by electronic support materials, extra hours provided to make a full use of the computer lab using CALL, introducing blended learning with the university e-learning system, and the like).
