The prototype radial oil hydrodynamic bearing (P1) was developed based on designs achieved through advanced computational methods and optimization strategies. This innovative design is designed with the primary objective of effectively minimizing frictional losses, minimizing wear on the working surfaces of the bearings and achieving acceptable vibration of the turbocharger rotor. The key element of the P1 are specifically engineered working surfaces of a precisely defined shape that represent a significant improvement over conventional bearing designs. Significant improvements in representative parameters have been verified through a series of technical experiments carried out on a turbocharger using this new bearing design. In particular, the modification of the working surfaces has led to an improvement in performance characteristics, in particular a reduction in the mechanical losses of the entire turbocharger lubrication system of approximately 21-30% over the entire operating speed range of the turbocharger. This represents a significant leap forward in optimising the efficiency of the rotor system. An integral part of a successful bearing design is a targeted shape of the working surface adapted to the lubricant properties and operating conditions. The interaction between the P1 radial bearing and the rotor assembly ensures complete limitation of excessive vibration and long service life under various operating conditions without significant wear. The P1 is seamlessly integrated into the engineering experiments forming part of the turbocharger bearing testing program. Rigorous validation was carried out through a comprehensive series of measurements under design and off-design operating conditions, and these verified the performance improvements and confirmed the bearing's effectiveness in real-world applications.
